My students tend to be reluctant readers, so when we study novels, I do my best to find books that are extremely engaging. Last year we studied Susan Beth Pfeffer's Life As We Knew It for our unit on dystopias. My students couldn't get enough of this book! They came to class every day begging to read more! Dystopia is a genre that really appeals to the middle school mindset--the world is ending and its up to me to survive! Very middle school. Despite this engagement, Life As We Knew It didn't reach all of my students. The main character is a girl from a middle-class family living in rural Pennsylvania. My students are mainly low-income and from the city. I would like to use the second book in the series, The Dead and the Gone, in order to differentiate instruction and appeal to more of my students. The protagonist of this novel, Alex Morales, must care for his sisters in the middle of New York City during the crisis of the moon being hit. The events parallel Life As We Knew It. Ideally, I would have half of the class reading each novel, working in literature circles, and reporting to a partner on the events taking place. Not only will my students have a great novel study, but they will be discussing books in a way that is authentic and inspiring!
