These books will assist me in delivering lessons to the students teaching them about mindfulness, social awareness, interpersonal skills, how to be good decision-makers, and in general, how to help them in their mental and emotional development. Often times we want the students to learn math when they are emotionally not OK. In my lessons, I give students tools to help them regulate their emotions so that they can feel safe and be good learners. I work with a population of children where a lot of them need extra emotional support due to their traumatic backgrounds and lack of stability at home. These two sets of books are research-based and can be used with all of our students. As the school counselor, I have the opportunity to teach these skills and give students the tools to be emotionally "safe" at school. Often times teachers lack the time to do lessons that are focused on these concepts; that is where I come in. So far, I have not had an actual curriculum because of the lack of funding. This year, I want to be intentional and offer students information that has been proved to work. The books will also help me stay consistent so that as students move up grades, they would already have the background on those concepts.
