Doing authentic science involves collecting data, doing calculations with that data, and reporting results. Because the data in chemistry involves very large and very small numbers, logarithms, and complex calculations, scientific calculators are essential. I have spent six years teaching, and I love TI-30X calculators. They are simply the most straightforward calculators for a high school chemistry class. Students will use these calculators frequently (approximately once a week) in order to engage in authentic science experiences. Having a set of calculators that are all the same will help us compare our calculations and will allow me to easily teach all of the students how their calculators are used.
