Teaching science is often understood as being factual—an inquiry into the abstract to produce concrete understanding. However, science is a subject that is both socially and empirically applicable to the lives of our students, and it's my hope that exposing them to feminist literature (especially Chicana feminism and eco-feminism) will empower them beyond understanding women's history in science. By using weekly classroom circles (a restorative justice practice), I hope to provide students with the opportunity to read and then discuss important topics in science such as: Why are women and POC under-represented in STEM? How can history inform our future action? What issues (scientific or not) challenge your education and community? The books will help provide articles and resources for our classroom, and the button maker will be used to create a culture of rewarding positive behavior that promotes equity in our science classrooms. (will be shared with other teachers)
