When I came into my classroom, the seating options that I had available were all the same: standard school chairs. While this seating style works for some students, many may need other options in order to do their best learning. At the end of my first week, I asked the students this question: If you could change something about this class in order to help you learn, what would it be? 16 out of 23 students wrote that they would really like to have a variety of options for seating. I believe that students should have ownership and choice in regards to the environment in which they are learning. Flexible seating options would be a huge step toward that ideal! The items I chose for this project are some basic flexible seating options that would help me provide my students with greater choice in their learning environment. The ball seats and wobble stools both engage students' core muscles and allow them to move, which helps some students focus. The wobble cushions add a greater level of movement and muscle engagement to a standard chair, which helps students who work best with an "in between" option.
