I have seen how choice can positively affect my students ability to work independently, make positive behavioral choices, complete assigned tasks, and participate in class. I hope that flexible seating options will help them be even more successful in my mainstream classroom. Flexible seating will allow students to take charge of their learning and make choices that work best for them. They will be able to choose a location or seat that works for them-- at different tables, in desks, or in different types of seating. Making sure students are comfortable is essential to helping them feel comfortable taking risks in the learning environment. I hope that by offering more seating options for students, that they will feel more connected to the classroom, be more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting in their assigned traditional desk. The products selected will help my students by giving them seating options to make more effective learning choices. All of the seats are portable and will allow students (or me!) to quickly reconfigure the classroom to best serve our needs. All of the products are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. So, we could set up different areas of the classroom so students could work on different tasks simultaneously. (One area that I'd like to focus on with support staff is discussion groups and Socratic seminars. These are challenges for language learners and for students with behavioral concerns; so, the ability to move and change quickly will be important and it will prepare them for learning environments at higher levels. These tasks are critical for their future success.)
