Throughout the year, students will explore their identities, how these are affected by society, and ultimately, how they their choices determine who they are and how they affect the world. In the second unit, after having explored their own identities in a personal narrative essay, students will begin to examine the ways in which race, class, and gender intersect to affect human experience and identity. Students will learn and apply the term "intersectionality" to a variety of poems, and then ultimately, with your help, to Toni Morrison's novel, Sula. After completing a sociological analysis of the text, students will complete a project in which they create a PSA of their choosing regarding one of the major themes of the text.
