The New York Times Upfront magazine inspires and empowers students to engage with the world they live in and think critically about the news and information they consume. My 7th and 8th grade students, most of whom are reluctant readers, want to understand the current events happening around them but they don't access a lot of high quality information. Upfront magazine offers students high-interest, easy to read articles about current events. Upfront magazine also offers engaging activities to help students think critically about those current events. My students will enjoy reading these magazines and doing the activities each month, and most importantly, they will learn a great deal about the world around them and become more engaged, critical participants in their society and world. With this subscription, each month my 160 seventh and eighth grade students will have access to reading material at their levels and activities that allow them to analyze the current events happening in their world. While using these resources, I hope to use the time to provide more one-on-one support to students. Students will also discuss these current events in my classroom, in other classes, and in their homes. A subscription of 40 Upfront magazines will support 160 middle school students in learning about current events for an entire year!
