These novels will open up a world of different experiences, and engage students in thought provoking questions and conversation. Additionally, these novels will allow my students to view the world through a different identity lens than what they are used to viewing their life through. Especially in light of the current racial and identity issues happening in our country, it is important that students are able to use literature as a window into others' lives, cultures and experiences. These novels will be utilized in an independent literature circle unit focusing on identity and culture. Students will use these novels to explore the experiences of the characters in the novels and engage in dialogue and questioning in regards to the themes of the novels. Students will come together and discuss their novels' similarities and differences. Ultimately, these novels will provide a window for students to look outside of themselves, their culture and their identity. Allowing them to understand and explore the idea that everyone is welcomed and loved no matter their identity.
