Currently, my students sit in hard, cold, and uncomfortable plastic chairs. Many get fidgety, become restless and exhibit challenging behavior. Offering the opportunity for flexible seating will make their day more comfortable and lead to more learning. Findings from a North Carolina University study highlight many benefits of flexible seating such as sensory input, fun, collaboration, community building, comfort, and physical health.
Not only do I want my students to amass in the benefits of flexible seating highlighted above. I want to give my students a choice to decide where they want to sit for independent work. Flexible seating allows students to wobble, rock or bounce. I want my students to feel empowered in the classroom by having a choice. A choice to sit in a seat that works for their own learning. Flexible seating will help create a more student-centered classroom.
My students need a variety of choices to sit in while they work. A wobble chair will help a wiggly student focus by allowing them to rock back and forth; a balance ball will help a student concentrate on their writing by allowing the flow of extra energy to bounce off; an inflatable donut will help a student relax as they read a book
