Research shows that the most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. It also shows that children with greater access to books show more enjoyment of books, reading, and academics in general. When students are surrounded by books from various genres that are highly engaging, they are more likely to find the right kind of book and get hooked on reading. All of the books I have chosen are highly engaging books that students LOVE to read. When I place a new book in my classroom library, I always do a book talk on it with the students. It is a way for the kids to get excited about the book. It is so great watching the kids rush to the classroom library to check out the book. These books will become the students independent reading books and the books that they and I will talk about during our reading conferences. This project will help my students grow stronger in reading this school year.
