Gifted children have a tendency toward "intensities," or "overexcitabilities." These can be physical, emotional, sensual, intellectual, and imaginational. With profoundly gifted children, these intensities are even more...intense. My students need to learn to cope with these intensities; it's not something they will just figure out on their own (like reading). This year, we are implementing consistent, daily, focused social and emotional lessons with our students. One of the ways we help our students with their intensities, stress, and body control is through yoga, movement and meditation. Previously, we were using used gym mats that were falling apart. The kids were unable to be fully present in their yoga and meditation when they were having more fun pulling foam mats apart. Dedicated yoga mats would lead them to taking their yoga practice more seriously and therefore making it more impactful.
