Some of my students are coming from various backgrounds that have had exposure to outstanding learning experiences. However, many of my students lack these breakthrough moments in their school careers. Finding out what they're truly made of, that being DNA is essential for the student to feel a sense of self and belonging among their peers. We're so much more alike than we are different. In fact, according to our DNA, we're 99% similar to everything from cricket to a dinosaur! It's the 1% that gives us just enough uniqueness to know we belong. I plan to utilize these materials primarily during my DNA Unit. The Puzzle Kit allows the students to manipulate the parts of DNA kinesthetically before they can apply its function to the Forensic Classroom Kit. This holistic learning allows the students to make mental connections that wouldn't have happened through worksheets.
