I will bring the life and excitement of grade level Scholastic News into the classroom. Kids love learning about things that affect their lives. It helps them realize how they fit into this world. Our goal is to organize a challenge group with them during the week to dig deeper into text. It's often difficult to gather more challenging and engaging activities for those gifted students. All students will get to read the Scholastic News magazines as a whole class and we will search for text features, identify the main idea of a multi-paragraph text, and have exposure to different vocabulary, glossaries, indexes, etc. I would also like to a smaller quantity of Scholastic News at the 1st and 3rd grade level to use in a small group setting. This will help differentiate instruction with non-fiction text as well.
