I want to help students get out of their own "alike groups" in our classroom community through books! I want to offer students choices in what they read. I want students to not only see themselves in the stories they read, but I want them to see life through the perspective of others through stories. The books requested in this project will help us have more choices in our classroom library. We will use the books requested in this project during our daily reading routine and discuss them in a variety of ways each week. Using the stories we read to recognize all of the ways a variety of viewpoints are the same and are unique. These conversations will work as springboards to writing and community projects.
Ultimately, the books will be the gateway to helping students in my classroom to build a community of thinkers and problem-solvers. As stated in Gallagher and Kittle's book, "Increasing the volume of reading helps prepare students to navigate a changing world as well as to develop empathy and understanding. Readers are important in a democracy".
