I want my students to have the power of choice: the choice of who is reading with them, the choice of which book they want to read, and the choice to keep coming to school because they want to know what happens next in THEIR book that they just can’t put down. As an English department, we have created times where students leave their regular English class to travel to a reading group to read a high-interest book of their choosing. Students love their reading time, but due to lack of funding, we have had a difficult time finding enough copies of high-interest books for our students. I am asking for two class sets of books to help support our project. Dear Martin is about a young boy they looks to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King jr. to help him through social injustice within his own life. I had one copy of this book in my class last year, and students were waiting eagerly for their turn to read it! I can’t wait to read it as a group!
