By physically constructing geometric figures using a straight edge, compass, and/or protractor students can explore: - How the Pythagorean Theorem works and why; - Nets for Platonic Solids (tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron); - Estimating angle measurements; - Visual representations of math concepts, including formulas for area and volume calculations; - Visual representations of mathematical patterns, including irrational numbers, relationships between angles, linear growth, and exponential growth; Each of these are connected to the Common Core Standards associated with 8th grade Geometry 8.G.A.1 through 8.G.C.9. Using these materials, students will construct models, make observations, and take notes to support the conceptual understanding of math.
