As a first year teacher, I am in need of a classroom library! My goal is to one day have an overflow of books that are engaging and will help my students develop a love for reading. Specifically, I will have my classroom go "Book shopping" in my class library for any 2 books that get them excited to read. Students will get to keep these books with them throughout the week. This will give students the opportunity to develop ownership over their book choices, and to discover how fun and engaging books can be when they have a connection to the book they are reading. Having a variety of books will allow every individual in my classroom to find books that they identify with. Having a large assortment of books will ensure that each student will be able to find something that can get them excited to read. My project also includes a large assortment of books that are centered around social-emotional learning. Each morning, my classroom dedicates time to learn social-emotional skills. I believe that by reading these books to the class and allowing students to discuss and reflect on them, that my students will be able to get a better grasp on the abstract ideas that are discussed in social-emotional lesson plans. These books will be a catalyst for conversation about bullying, dealing with difficult feelings, regulating emotions, and much more. I believe that students learn through a story and that these books will get students engaged in the process of learning about how they can develop social-emotional skills.
