My English II students will be reading Frederick Douglass's narrative, discussing the book, and writing an essay about the book. We will have class discussions on past events from a historical and cultural perspective. Students will be able to examine Douglass's journey from a historical context, comparing it to things that are going on in today's social and political climate. Students will complete in-class reading and will read some chapters for homework. Again, there will be classroom discussions, quizzes, role playing assignments, and students will have to complete a Modern Language Association (MLA) format essay on Douglass's narrative. As a result, students will engage in reading and discussing informational texts and be able to think critical about past and present events in literature and history.
