Learning to speak another language has so many benefits! It helps us understand and use our own language more thoughtfully, as well as gain insight to and acceptance of people and cultures from other places. While learning a new language, it is important to have successes along the way to stay motivated, such as reading and understanding a magazine in the language you are learning. These Scholastic magazines are leveled and will be used in all three levels of my Spanish classes throughout the entire year. Students love to read in the language they are learning and it really helps to have reading materials that are current with articles that are interesting to them. What I like about these Scholastic magazines is that you also have access to videos about the articles/subject and a language lab with listening exercises. This year I will have a visually impaired student in my class and I feel that having access to the magazine online where he can enlarge it and listen to the audio will be especially beneficial to him, not to mention all of my students. They also offer weekly news items differentiated for all three levels with interactive activities. The teacher lessons provided correlate with the national standards for foreign language teaching. When students read in a foreign language, they become better speakers of that language. They learn vocabulary and sentence structure which they then mimic when they write and speak in the target language. These magazines will provide a springboard for conversations where everyone will use the same vocabulary. My students work so hard! They would look forward to this magazine arriving, which means they would look forward to learning!
