Reading is supposed to be a wonderful journey through an author's book and shouldn't be strictly done sitting at a desk. I want my students to learn to love and value reading but in the most natural way possible. As a child and adult, I loved laying down and getting lost in a book and I want my reluctant readers to feel that safe comfortable space at school. Students can lay out on the carpet with pillows, lounge on a huge bean bag with a friend or sit at a stool and counter as if they were at a coffee shop. Reading is a beautiful thing and for students to be able to get lost in a story they need to feel comfortable to stay engaged. We spend the majority of our time in class reading and writing independently, the best way for our students' skills to grow. That time is protected in my classroom and should feel like a special time and place in their day.
