When students have access to basic tools for their education, it is one less thing that is a barrier to their success. By no means is this list exhaustive, but it is a beginning that helps lower the stress of not having what they need, from a sharpened pencil to headphones that will make project-based learning activities throughout the year possible. One example of a project that students will engage in is using the headphones to individually create iMovies in which they present their learning regarding a human body system and a disease that affects that system. Another use is for students to access online audio books and videos that tie in to the curriculum, empowering them to be curious and take ownership of their learning beyond the classroom materials. Many of us know that there are those within our community that have more barriers to overcome than others - solely based on who they are and where they were born. Part of our job is to give them the tools and the skills that help them learn how to navigate the world around them in order to be fulfilled, successful members of society.
