I believe that having access to high-interest, good literature, coupled with the ability to discuss that literature with peers, gives students a solid foundation for their future as a student, and a citizen. I strive to make my classroom a rich learning environment using literature and the arts as a foundation to help kids develop a lifelong love of learning. The book "I, Juan de Pareja" not only gives students a lens into a world of Spanish art and culture, but it touches on themes of perseverance, equality, family bonds, and loyalty in friendship. This book is a wonderful choice for developing young adults. I plan on integrating not only lessons in historical context for my students with this book, but lessons in art, geography, and social-emotional skills.
