This funding will allow me, as a fifth-grade teacher, to begin serving my classroom of approximately 25 students on a daily basis. I would like to utilize this funding immediately to introduce more STEM materials like robotic STEM kits and activities such as the LEGO simple machines. Once the Innovation Nation is fully functional and supplies are ordered and introduced to the classroom, success will be assessed by student engagement, motivation, and creativity used in the learning process. The benefits of our Innovation Nation will be far-reaching and impactful. It will encourage students to participate in peer-supported learning opportunities and build a thriving learning community. Similarly, it will develop a system of cooperation with students outside the normal circle of friends and learn to appreciate students with different skill sets and strengths than themselves. While addressing the 4Cs of the 21st Century Learner, the proposed maker space will assist in building a set of soft skills such as problem-solving, leadership, self-direction and work ethic. As community members, we know that employers value these soft skills when they are looking to hire their employees. Therefore, it is never too early to begin teaching our students these timeless, invaluable skills. This hands-on Innovation Nation is comprised of learners, builders, and makers all working on open-ended and inquiry-based projects in which there are multiple options for success. Not only that, but this process and physical space empower students to take risks, productively struggle, and immerse themselves in a cycle of trial and error. As educators, it is this cycle of trying and failing where authentic learning happens.
