Our classroom needs to have engaging and structured activities to foster the student’s independence as well as enhance their reading skills. A listening center will provide both of these things. Each day our class is broken up into small groups and rotated around the classroom to different centers. The students learn to work independently while the teacher gets much needed small group time to meet the needs of all the students. Listening to stories at the listening center will refine listening skills. Students will listen to many different genres of stories. Listening to stories will also enhance their comprehension skills as they complete the work that goes along with the story they listened to. Listening to stories and following along are key in developing fluency in reading. Kindergarten is just the beginning of their reading journey. I want to create readers for life!
