My students need ongoing support, not only with academics, but with social skills as well. Many times when we are creating our class rules, the students suggest that one of the rules should say "Be nice." Their intentions are good; however, the students need ongoing examples and class discussions to reinforce what kindness looks like. Since the students love listening to stories read aloud, this is a perfect way to show them examples of kindness. Usually when teaching social skills, I try to find a book from the school or public library that is appropriate for the topic. I would like to have a classroom set of books, readily available, with the theme of kindness that could be read aloud and incorporated into lessons and class discussions throughout the school year. The books that I have chosen discuss topics such as showing kindness to classmates, family, neighbors, animals, as well as showing kindness to yourself! My hope is that if the students experience a climate of kindness in the classroom, they will be able to take it out into the community and share it with others!
