Reading can not only change you, but the way you perceive the world around you; and by changing the way you think, you end up changing the way you act, which just might change the world. The first step to this amazing possibility for change is finding the book(s) that speak to each one of my students and opens up their minds and, quite possibly, their hearts. Words are powerful. Albus Dumbledore said, "words are ... our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it." (Thank you, J.K. Rowling!) My seniors need that remedy before they graduate, which is why they will be reading every Friday in my classroom. They will have the opportunity to talk to their peers, and to me, about the most captivating elements of the book, but - most importantly - they will have the ability to spark the desire to read in their classmates. What a beautiful legacy that will be. They will also build their reading stamina so that the 300-500 page reading requirement per week in college will not be as daunting as it might seem now.
