Independent reading for pleasure is one of the best ways for students to develop a love for reading and to strengthen their language arts skills. Choice reading improves both fluency and comprehension, and has a positive impact on writing skills. The more my students read, the better they will do as thinkers and writers. Unfortunately, many students do not have easy access to books outside of school. My classroom library now has some fresh, new titles in it, but most of it is cobbled together with yellowing older paperbacks and library discards. Having shelves full of exciting contemporary books and classics would help inspire my students to follow through on their goal of reading for fun for 30 minutes a day.
