When supplies are readily available, more time is devoted to the learning process. The supplies will increase active engagement and increase student performance. We use highlighters to identify key terms, in the question stems. This practice allows struggling students to repeatedly recognize academic vocabulary terms in context. The repetition develops content knowledge and allows students to think about the necessary steps related to problem solving. The dry erase markers come into play when students show their work on the white board. When students demonstrate their understanding in front of the class, it affords opportunities for their peers to correct their thinking and justify their reasoning. I use the blue and green pens to access students performance in real time. I visit each student and use the blue pen to mark a check to indicate that the student is on track and the green pen to make notes and/or mark a check to indicate that the student is off task. This technique keeps students actively engaged. They often call for me to review their progress. I attribute this technique to have the most impact on student performance.
