The set of books I am requesting will be put to good use! I have one copy of the book in the room at the moment and it is a race for students to get it! They love the colorful pages, the text features, and the use of maps and drawings by the author to share basic information about a variety of American History topics. I love that the book aligns perfectly with my units of study for both seventh and eighth grade. Students have so many questions and this book helps them find answers. Students within the classroom have come from several different learning environments that have offered a wide range of interaction with Social Studies. Instruction within my classroom is delivered using the Workshop Model as well as guiding students through an inquiry arch for each unit of study. Students have the opportunity to ask questions, gather information, and present their findings in a variety of ways. Unfortunately, students don't know what questions to ask because they do not have a basic understanding of the events of the past. This book provides an excellent overview of a variety of topics in a way that is engaging to students. They want to read more! And, they are left with questions that they can research to learn more about. Seventh and eighth grade students want the opportunity to be independent. This book meets them at their level and will act as a guide to the various units of study throughout their time in Social Studies. By providing basic information about a topic, students are left wondering more. The spark of wonder leads to engaging conversation and the drive to learn more.
