Our school is a Title 1 school in Orlando, Florida. Disadvantaged students at our school are falling far behind other students in the state, and our school has large achievement gaps. Being a second year school counselor with very few counseling materials, I would like to help my students with their social and emotional growth. Many of my students have come from other countries due to natural disasters, financial hardships, or to simply seek refugee. The social and emotional learning books that I selected will help me lead individual and small group counseling sessions with students by giving them stories to relate to and by helping them understand that they are not alone. By helping improve their social and emotional health, those academic gaps will become smaller.
