My students will be using a brand new curriculum this year, so my plan is to implement literature groups that will supplement the new text that we will be using. These books are meant to enhance our unit themes which include Childhood and Exploration. I am new to teaching sixth grade language arts, so I am excited to be diving in to something new, but since I am building from the ground up this year, I would really love the opportunity to build my collection for my students. I feel that it is so important for my students to want to engage themselves in reading on their own without using an obligatory list of novels, so I try to provide diverse reading experiences in my classroom. Our curriculum provides many different reading and writing experiences for our students that will help prepare them for life outside of school. I am looking forward to giving this new curriculum 100%, but having these supplemental novels will help bring my teaching and their learning to the next level!
