Using a thesaurus will help my students to write more clearly. It also supports their reading comprehension, providing synonyms that aid understanding of dictionary entries. We'll be using thesauruses daily. Broadening my students' vocabularies gives them access to the power of language. They discover, for example, that feeling "elated" is different from feeling "jovial." They're better able to characterize their own experiences - if you're feeling "queasy," I'll write you a nurse's pass. If, however, you're feeling "demoralized," we'll work together to understand why. Most importantly, finding that they CAN "figure out how to say things" strengthens their "morale" and their "resilience."
