During a good class discussion thoughts are recorded and displayed as quickly as possible. Students analyze, argue, and edit their findings. Colored markers can emphasize themes or link ideas. A whiteboard makes this process happen more easily and smoothly than an old-fashioned blackboard. A whiteboard allows students to be more creative when documenting their thoughts, whether using text or illustrations. We want the process to be fast, fun, and thoughtful. One example of how I use a whiteboard in my classroom is an activity we do at the beginning of the year. Students choose adjectives to describe themselves. After reviewing what an adjective is, students begin giving examples of their own. We record them as quickly as possible and sort them into alphabetical order. Students then use these words as part of an acrostic name poem that we later display in class. It’s a simple lesson, but it’s an effective one that encourages the class participation that I am looking for.
