Using books recommended by the National Science Teacher's Association, as well as other established science teachers, I plan to make reading about science fun in my classroom. Using these trade books with great imagery and interesting plots, my students will be learning about science without even knowing it.
These grade-level books cover all of the standards we will discuss and are representational of every single student I will have now and in the future. They will inspire my students to continue dreaming big, by seeing themselves in the scientific texts. They will see career opportunities that maybe they hadn't considered and understand the relevance of science in their everyday life.
These books will be used in two main ways. First, they will be used as supplementary readings for each standard and unit, pulling examples and piquing their interest in the book itself. We will have discussions about the science, as well as the careers and opportunities they suggest. Secondly, they will be used as a tool for encouraging independent reading after assessments. If students finish early, they will be given excerpts from the relevant readings or told to choose a book from the library.
