When students at our school enroll in track & field it is almost always their first time competing in the sport, which initially puts us at a significant disadvantage. Many of our closest competitors begin competing in the fourth grade or sooner, this will be the pilot year for a 7th and 8th grade program at our school. Our weight room currently consists of free weights that are no less than 40 lbs, four squat racks, and a heap of broken plyometric boxes. In addition to the lack of strengthening equipment our athletes also lack hurdling equipment, a high jump pit, a pole vault pit, and a proper throwing ring. The type of equipment I have selected will further support the training style we have already been relying on and implementing which includes body weight movements, high intensity interval training, and functional mobility. Despite facing such adversity we have managed to produce multiple students who have individual state titles in high school and have gone on to college to be ranked nationally and break collegiate records. My students have displayed an unmatched enthusiasm not only on the track but also in the classroom. Imagine what these young student athletes could accomplish with the proper training equipment.
