Hardcover books are an exciting and rewarding way to encourage students to write. The students will spend weeks researching and writing about The Westward Expansion. These informative pieces of writing will also include quotes and sources. The children will include illustrations on each page, maps, as well as, a table of contents and timeline. Then, students receive lessons to matte their writing. The reward for all their hard work is the gift of a book, a book the student calls their own. The children are elated to receive this gift. Students don't even realize how much they have learned because they are having so much fun being creative. The fifth graders invite primary students to our classroom to have a book talk with the author. This is the most rewarding experience for both the primary and fifth grade students.
