Kindergarten is, for many kids, the first exposure to school. That makes this year so vital, as this is when students begin developing their opinion on learning. Creating a welcoming and inclusive classroom community allows these new learners to feel comfortable in this new, scary environment. Coming in with minimal schooling, kindergartners often struggle to adjust to the idea of “assigned seats,” sitting still for long periods, and working independently. Research has shown that providing options for differentiated seating can help increase focus, promote learning and heighten the students’ engagement in school. Simply being allowed to wiggle in a seat can turn a student’s performance around completely. Often, it is not that the student cannot complete the task academically, but rather he/she cannot stay still for long enough to complete the given assignment. We need to give little ones the resources to show us how capable they are! A wobble stool or wobble cushion is a simple swap that may open up an entire world of learning.
