My school district is in the midst of consolidating to preserve financial stability, so the typical funds are not available to update classrooms. I was recently moved into a new classroom where chalkboards are still in use. I wrote some information on the board for the first day of school, and my students in the back of the room had a difficult time discerning the information they had to copy. I realized I needed to find a better way for students to see the information I was writing on the boards at the front of the room. The most common marker used is a black marker, and anything written in black marker can be seen by the back of the class just as easily as it can be in the front rows. The contrast of the white board against the colored markers creates bright and discernible content that students can see. As the consolidation continues and my class sizes become larger and larger, dry erase boards to replace chalkboards will become more and more necessary.
