During the school year, students are encouraged to read on their own because it helps to increase fluency, vocabulary, and higher level thinking. They have access to teacher libraries and school libraries, which make finding a book they are interested in easier. At our school students have access to a limited local public library or they have to drive 40 minutes to the nearest average public library. Because of these inconveniences, most of our students don't pick up a book to read over summer. Please help me encourage my students to continue reading over the summer by giving them a novel of their own. This will help to prevent the summer slide, where students regress as they forget what they have been doing in school.
