Our students come from low-income, high-crime areas within the Washington D.C area. While they come from these high stress and taxing situations at home, they enter our building to learn how to become better listeners, stronger students, problem solvers, and active participants in their communities. These items will allow us to create a welcoming space where students can tell their stories via writing workshops and learn from the stories that have already been told including books from Toni Morrison (Song of Solomon) and Alice Walker, (The Color Purple), stories by Maya Angelou, Junot Diaz, and poetry by Jericho Brown, and many others. By having these items available in our classroom, we can authentically create a learning environment that is both culturally responsive and joyful.
