I want my students to learn that maps don’t just show us where the pirate treasure is—maps also are a form of communication, connecting us to each other and the world. Help me provide my students with materials for an integrated unit that covers map skills, writing and reading informational texts and practicing effective communication. This project will involve learning cardinal directions, using a compass, interpreting map keys, reading and making maps. As we master map use, students will learn how our country fits into a larger world using our new globes. Additionally we will be exchanging postcards with students from all 50 states in an effort to share information about the states that make up this diverse country. The Post Card Exchange with peers will be a huge learning incentive for the acquisition of map skills, as well as reading and writing skills with an authentic purpose! Post cards we receive will be displayed on a large map to help students visualize where each state is located as well as to compare and contrast the regions of our country. These shared experiences will help my students to understand that they are an important part of a larger connected community.
