On the first day of kindergarten, students see learning as a bright, colorful adventure. Yet, their first task, sitting still in a chair, often squanders their vision of what school looks and feels like. Flexible seating, which offers students the option to sit on bouncer balls, wobble stools, or squishy cushions, has been proven to increase student engagement and improve attention span. This relatively small, yet costly, logistical classroom upgrade allows teachers to be inclusive of students of all abilities who may be better served with an option to wiggle while learning. As a teacher, my goal is to make each student feel welcomed in a vibrant classroom and encourage exploration, independence, and a love for school.
