We are a Title I school with 85% of students in poverty. Most of these students fall into the achievement gap and are destined to drop out of school in the future because they are not able to keep up with the curriculum. When technology is implemented properly it can help produce huge gains in student achievement and engagement especially for students most at risk. Many of these students do not have access to technology at home and that makes it a challenge for them to succeed throughout their schooling because they do not have the tools to complete projects or homework. Using tablets in the classroom makes learning more interactive and engaging for students. It can help supplement instruction and further explain topics through exploring on tablets. Using tablets can also stimulate high-level thinking and student discussion because they are eager to learn and discuss what they are learning about. Research has proven that appropriate technology used in thoughtful ways can help make substantial gains in learning and technological readiness. These students have a lack of access to technology that can help them close the achievement gap and succeed in school. This is why it is so important for me to give them access to ensure that they are one step closer to closing that gap and not failing to succeed in school.
