The first step in helping a child who is struggling socially and emotionally is to have social and emotional resources readily available to them and our teachers and parents. Picture books about emotion and social-emotional issues can help children think deeply about feelings and social issues. When children can identify with characters' emotions they can better understand how to empathize with their feelings, and express emotions productively. If I were to see a student always checking social and emotional books, which will be separated from the others, I would make an appointment to meet with me, allowing them to build a relationship with me. I hope a colleague(s) working with a student with social and emotional issues will inform me of the student and the issue, and I would suggest a book relevant to meet their social and emotional needs.
