STEM activities will provide my students with engaging and meaningful tasks. My first grade curriculum (reading and math) is very scripted and gives very little leeway on how I teach the material. I want to step out of the box, when possible, and give my students unstructured time to explore and learn through STEM. I want to instill a love for science and engineering at a young age. Often times, these are overlooked or pushed aside in younger grades. By donating to our class, you will be creating flexible thinkers who will learn to collaborate and use different problem solving skills. In my class, students will be given several opportunities throughout the week to use STEM activities. They may choose an activity upon arrival, when their work is complete, or during team building time. Specific task cards will also be given during structured learning time. During this time, students will be given a task to accomplish using the material that I have requested. The material that I am requesting will benefit my first graders in many ways. It will encourage them to think outside the box, challenge them in ways they have not be previously challenged, and foster a deep love for science, technology, engineering, and math. They will learn to persevere when things do not turn out as planned and use flexible thinking to problem solve.
