Starting the school year with an independent novel study like Tears of a Tiger will prompt my students to think deeply about the decisions they are forced to make daily. The first set of the Hazelwood High Trilogy, Tears of a Tiger, focuses on what teens in our school experience often. Not only will this thrilling independent novel study build strong awareness on teen issues, it shows clear consequences of poor decision making. Reading will allow my students to experience the world through a different lens. The novel will be assigned during Week 3 and students will be able to take their novel home and share their reading with their parents and siblings. The powerful message that is resonated throughout the novel will spark conversation at home and enhance the daily novel talk in the classroom. Most importantly, students will be exposed to relevant topics and situations which they can connect.
