When students are asked to write, they often stare at a blank piece of white paper, pencil in hand, and say "now what?". They are often overwhelmed and can't get started, fearing they might fail. As an English teacher, finding a way to develop, motivate, and empower students to write is a challenge. A new writing program introduced in my district will help ALL students become better writers in all subject areas. This program reaches students at their own level of writing and provides many opportunities to improve. It uses color-coding to help students organize ideas and facts in different ways, allowing them to share information while finding their own voice. Much of the program involves peer interaction to share and strengthen their writing. All these items together will make students more confident and willing to take a chance with their writing, no matter what class they are in. So the next time students are given a blank piece of paper and a pencil (plus markers, rulers, and other materials), they will smile and start sharing what they know with the world.
