Sensory tools make a huge difference in the ability to focus on content for students with sensory regulation and executive functioning issues. They are used for that purpose, not as toys. Some work better for students than others, so a variety is essential to determine which tool is the best fit and provides the most focus. Once we "try" out the different tools, students will be assigned tools and will have a place in each classroom to access their tool and return it at the end of the period. Through experience, if they leave the classroom, they become broken and lost. Since we move between 6 classrooms for content areas, we will need six sets to accommodate students needs. Tools chosen are those that we have found successful in the past. They are the tools students most frequently gravitate toward. These sensory tools greatly improve students focus on the content area curriculum and I believe enable them to be more successful.
