These materials can provide students with an outlet for their complex sensory needs. Students that access this space are learning to live with ADHD and/or the emotions that are paired with trauma. Often participating in gross motor activities helps the student to release the energy that interferes with their ability to focus and participate in the classroom. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, students are not permitted to move around so freely. Some students need a way to release their energy so they can regulate their bodies and sustain sitting in their seats in class. Students generally access the movement space as a brief break from the classroom. Upon entering the space, the students check in and communicate what they need to regulate their bodies. After signing in, they set a timer and move to the movement space. They engage in their activity for about 10 minutes, leaving 2-3 minutes to calm down and prepare their body and brain to rejoin their class. Providing this opportunity for the students helps them learn to understand their bodies and how they can be in control of regulating themselves so they can then be active, independent participants in their academic learning opportunities.
